Background

Alyssa Stoller is a current MSc student studying Marine Systems and Policies. Alyssa received her undergraduate degree in marine science, and her background has primarily revolved around the study of humpback whales in both the Cook Islands and Iceland. Specifically, Alyssa is very interested in working with local communities to discover more about whales through the use of citizen science.

Project Title

Cetaceans of Iceland: A Citizen Science Project

Project description

For her dissertation project this year, Alyssa is assessing the feasibility of citizen science to monitor cetacean distribution in Iceland. To do this Alyssa is using online surveys to gain information from residents and workers of Iceland, and specifically fishermen, about where they see whales, changes they have noticed throughout the years, their relationship with whales, and if they would be willing to contribute sightings to a citizen science project.
